ARTIST’S BOOK – ART TO READ

The Directorate of the State Museums of the City of Rome and the Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum for Decorative Arts, Costume and Fashion of the XIX and XX Centuries present a collection of forty-eight “artist’s books” made by thirty seven special authors, who interpret the reading through the means of expression of the visual arts.

“Artist’s books” at the Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum were created by: Bruno Aller, Vincenzo Arena, Antonio Barrese, Adriano Bergozza, Veronica Botticelli, Silvia Celeste Calcagno, Giuseppe Carta , Franco Durelli, Marisa Facchinetti, Enrico Franchi, Fausto Maria Franchi, Omar Galliani, Nicola Genco, Claudia Giannuli, Corrado Grifa, Massimo Luccioli, Theodosio Magnoni, Mirna Manni, Elio Marchegiani, Riccardo Monachesi, Elisa Montessori, Marcello Morandini, Elena Nonnis, Gianfranco Notargiacomo, Anna Onesti, Joseph Pace, Jasmine Pignatelli, Lamberto Pignotti, Pino Procopio, Paolo Radi, Anna Maria Russo, Giuseppe Salvatori, Filippo Sassòli, Attilio Taverna, Chiara Valentini, Emiliano Zucchini and Alessandra Alliata.

Each book is a source of experiences and a passing of the baton from the writer to the reader, with an unlimited possibility of spreading thought. As long as a book exists and is read it can tell the same story to dozens of generations, each of which, immersed in their own time, will make the cultural use they want: personal, social, historical. A book is always a gift, even when it has been purchased, because its content is company or knowledge.

The company is evident to anyone who loves to read and recognizes in the book the companion of a journey, of an evening in solitude; knowledge enriches the knowledge of each of us and we well know that it never runs out: there is always something to know, to put in the baggage of life experiences. It follows that books have always been considered a precious commodity, so much so that keeping them has constituted an achievement and a boast in all civilizations.

Reading first of all needs the conscious act of choosing to read: therefore it is immediately deepened and only after a few pages does one begin to immerse oneself in that complex world
and fascinating that the written words bring forth in the mind, imagination, reflection, emotional or cognitive participation.

The artist’s book wants to dress the words and the stories that are composed with them with the dress of visual art and make evident the symbolism of the richness and value of reading. For this reason, we have chosen to exhibit many works of art in the form, apparent or hidden, of books; in the extraordinariness and unpredictability of their content, they become a metaphor for a value that may seem hidden, seem hidden, but which is nevertheless universal.

Each of the thirty-seven artists present in the exhibition freely reflects, in their “artist’s book”, on the elements of research that have conveyed and made their artistic message evident: on the elements of research that have conveyed and made evident their artistic message: images and mate.

A non-trivial commitment must be recognized in this, which has given shape to works that sometimes align themselves with the traditional book, other times they distance themselves considerably, stimulating a reading that is not only comparable to a flow of words, but is itself above all manifestation of creative thinking.

The project was conceived and curated by Mariastella Margozzi with Vito Nicola Iacobellis and was presented in 2019 in the evocative spaces of the Swabian Castle of Bari and the Castle of Copertino (Le).

La Direzione Musei Statali della Città di Roma e il Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi per le Arti decorative, il Costume e la Moda dei secoli XIX e XX presentano una raccolta di quarantotto “libri d’artista” realizzati da trenta sette autori speciali, che interpretano la lettura attraverso i mezzi espressivi delle arti visive.

Ogni libro è una fonte di esperienze e un passaggio di testimone da chi ha scritto a chi legge, con una possibilità di diffusione del pensiero illimitata. Finché un libro esiste e viene letto può raccontare la stessa storia a decine di generazioni, ognuna delle quali, immersa nel proprio tempo, ne farà l’uso culturale che vuole: personale, sociale, storico. Un libro è sempre un dono, perfino quando è stato acquistato, perché il suo contenuto è compagnia o conoscenza.

La compagnia è evidente a chiunque ami leggere e riconosca nel libro il compagno di un viaggio, di una serata in solitudine; la conoscenza arricchisce il sapere di ognuno di noi e ben sappiamo che non lo esaurisce mai: c’è sempre qualcosa da sapere, da mettere nel bagaglio di esperienze della vita. Ne consegue che i libri sono sempre stati considerati un bene prezioso, tanto che conservarli ha costituito in tu tte le civiltà una conquista e un vanto.

La lettura ha bisogno prima di tutto dell’atto cosciente della scelta di leggere: pertanto è subito approfondimento e solo dopo qualche pagina ci si comincia ad immergere in quel mondo complesso
e affascinante che l e parole scritte fanno scaturire nella mente, immaginazione, riflessione, partecipazione emozionale o cognitiva.

Il libro d’artista vuole vestire le parole e le storie che con esse si compongono con l’abito dell’arte visiva e rendere evidente la simbologia della ricchezza e del valore della lettura. Per questo motivo si è scelto di esporre tante opere d’arte sotto forma, apparente o recondita, di libro; nella straordinarietà e imprevedibilità del loro contenuto, esse diventano metafora di un valore che può sembrare nascosto,sembrare nascosto, ma che è comunque universale.

Va riconosciuto in questo un impegno non banale, che ha dato forma a opere che a volte si allineano con il libro tradizionale, altre volte se ne distanziano notevolmente, stimolando a una lettura che non è solo equiparabile a uno scorrere di parole, ma è sè soprattutto manifestazione del pensiero creativo.

Il progetto è stato ideato e curato da Mariastella Margozzi con Vito Nicola Iacobellis ed è stato presentato nel 2019 nei suggestivi spazi del Castello svevo di Bari e del Castello di Copertino (Le).
